San Juan County WA Industries

Charts below provide snapshots of relative contributions of different industries to the San Juan County county economy. Industries are split by NAICS code. As needed, NAICS codes were grouped further to display more clearly; groupings vary somewhat among the charts because of differences in data availability for different measures. Unless otherwise stated, values are not adjusted for inflation.

Gross Business Income

Gross Business Income (GBI) reflects the relative sizes of private-sector businesses. GBI data aggregated for businesses by industry sector was provided courtesy of the WA Department of Revenue). The following plots show the relative magnitude of different industries in San Juan County (SJC).

(Click on plots below to open larger versions.)

The following plot shows the four major San Juan County industries over time, from before the 2008 recession, through the subsequent recovery period.

We selected a subset of smaller, industries that either could bring in income from out of the county or typically provide higher wages. To plot them on the same scale, we plotted the percentage change in each industries aggregate GBI since 2006, and made similar plots for these industries in Washington State. It is notable that the manufacturing sector has done relatively well in San Juan County, but the agriculture and professional/scientific/technical sectors have lagged the state.

Earnings

“Earnings” includes both employee compensation (wages, salaries, and supplements) as well as the proprietors’ income. Data on earnings and compensation (below) are from the U.S. Dept of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis regional data tools (tables CA5N [earnings] and CA6N [compensation]).

In contrast to Gross Business Income, earnings data includes public sector employers, and therefore includes both public and private sector contributions to the economy. Data for San Juan County (SJC), Washington State, and USA are shown with groups ordered based on proportions for SJC.

Earnings by industry in 2018 in SJC, WA, and USA. Data from US BEA table CAINC5N. Construction and accommodation are much larger sectors in SJC than in WA or USA; manufacturing, health, and transportation are much lower sectors in SJC than WA or USA.

Compensation

In contrast to Earnings, compensation (shown for 2016) only includes employee’s wages, salaries, and supplements.
